Mar-a-Lago, the sprawling Palm Beach, Florida, barrier island estate, is more than a luxurious resort; it is a National Historic Landmark with a rich history and complicated modern identity. Since Donald Trump bought it in 1985, the property has evolved from a lavish private home to an elite club and, importantly, a symbolic "Winter White House."
The history of Mar-a-Lago begins with cereal heiress and socialite Marjorie Merriweather Post, who envisioned the property as a lavish winter home. Taking four years to finish, the 126-room estate in 1927 was completed. The name of Mar-a-Lago is Spanish for "Sea-to-Lake," which describes its unique site running along the island from the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Worth Lagoon.
Hired architect Marion Sims Wyeth and designer Joseph Urban to create a Hispano-Moresque style version, fusing Spanish, Venetian, and Portuguese styles. The crescent-shaped structure is renowned for its intricately carved coral architectural ornamentation, extravagant interiors, and hurricane-resistant design founded on a coral reef. It was one of the most expensive non-royal houses ever built at that time.
Upon Post's death in 1973, she willed the estate to the U.S. Federal Government on the condition that it be used as a diplomatic or presidential retreat, a "Winter White House." However, due to high maintenance and security charges, the government later turned the estate over to the Post Foundation in 1983.
Donald Trump acquired the estate in 1985, reportedly for less than $10 million, after a sensational real estate deal saved the estate from being torn down. He initially used the lavish property as his private residence.
Acknowledging the enormous cost of maintaining the 17-acre compound, Trump converted it into The Mar-a-Lago Club in 1995. It is an upscale, member-only club featuring six-star diamond facilities like a world-class spa, guest bedrooms, championship tennis courts, and a beach club. The activity preserved the historic structure while bringing in revenue. Private living quarters in the walled-off portion of the compound is still owned by the Trumps.
The "Winter White House"
Mar-a-Lago's status achieved worldwide recognition during Donald Trump's first term. It frequently served as his presidential retreat and political events venue, effectively functioning Marjorie Merriweather Post's original concept of a "Winter White House."
Foreign dignitaries and heads of state, including the Prime Minister of Japan and the President of China, came to visit the club during this period. This confluence of a private business and a presidential command center generated a lot of controversy surrounding security and ethics.
Mar-a-Lago is still an elite private club and resort today. It remains a center of Palm Beach society and a location for politics, weddings, and galas. It is also the residence of the former president, thus a singularly influential and polarizing political and luxury real estate landmark in America. The continued grandeur of the estate ensures that it remains in the spotlight even decades after its first owner first dubbed it "Sea-to-Lake."
